Pursuing her dream she came all the way from Uganda| Sophia’s journey to photographing BAL

Sophia Kyobutuni is a 23-year-old girl from Uganda who dreamed of photographing the Basketball Africa League in Rwanda. She would watch BAL games on TV and imagine herself capturing those thrilling moments with her camera.

Sophia’s passion for photography began at a young age, and despite noticing that most photographers were men, she was determined to pursue her dream.

She says “ In Uganda, you will find many photographers are men, there are very few female photographers, and for me to be able to work in BAL is a major milestone.”

Sophie recognizes that photography is a male dominated profession but she is not threatened nor discouraged by it, she is in fact more motivated to set an example to other young women. Her journey inspires us to question and challenge societal expectations that may limit our potential.

But how did Sophia turn her dream into a reality? It wasn’t easy. She looked up to Tsaubah Stone, a Ugandan female sports photographer, who inspired her to follow her passion.

“I admired what she did and I thought to myself that one day I could be like her,” she said. “ She encouraged me into sports photography and I really love what I do.”

Sophia knew she had to work hard and overcome challenges to break into the male-dominated field. And that’s exactly what she did.

Sophia embarked on a long bus ride from Uganda to Rwanda, fueled by her unwavering determination. She was here on her own will, she was not coming to photograph for her institution or any other company.

The sacrifices she made and the courage it took to travel all that way is incredible. Pursuing our dreams often requires stepping outside our comfort zones and taking risks.

Pause for a moment and reflect on your own dreams and aspirations. What are they? Are you actively working towards turning them into reality? Sophia’s story reminds us that dreams can come true, but they also demand dedication, resilience, and a willingness to go the extra mile.

Sophia’s story is not just about her own success. It’s also about breaking stereotypes. As she entered the field of sports photography, Sophia challenged the notion that certain professions are reserved for one gender.

“Participating in BAL, I may be the next number one photographer of BAL. I will be on of the top ones. That is my dream–going from BAL to NBA.” she said adding that, “I know one day I will make it.”

Her story is a testament to the power of dreams, determination, and breaking stereotypes. Her story encourages us to believe in ourselves, challenge societal norms, and fearlessly pursue our aspirations.

Today ,let’s take inspiration from Sophia Kyobutuni and embark on our own journeys, knowing that with passion and perseverance, our dreams can become a reality.
