Young Rwandans, Kwita Izina 2025 is your story to tell

Picture this. It’s a crisp September morning in Kinigi, Musanze. The Virunga mountains stand tall, their peaks wrapped in mist, and the air carries the kind of freshness that makes you breathe a little deeper. The crowd gathers, from elders in colorful kitenge to young people clutching smartphones ready to livestream history. Music fills the air, drummers beat with pride, and dancers move with energy. Then comes the moment everyone has been waiting for, the baby gorillas, the newest members of Rwanda’s mountain families, are given their names.

That moment is Kwita Izina, and on 5th September 2025, Rwanda will celebrate its 20th edition of this world-famous event.

Kwita Izina is not just about names. It is about identity, pride, and survival. Just as we, Rwandans, are named to be known, remembered, and loved, these gorillas are named so the world knows them, follows their journey, and protects them. Over the years, more than 397 gorillas have been named. Each name is a promise a reminder that Rwanda does not just guard her treasures in vaults, but in living, breathing forests.

This year, the theme is clear: “A legacy of community-centered conservation, securing a sustainable future for all.” That future belongs to young people.

Tourism revenue from gorilla trekking creates opportunities that support schools, roads, and health centers. It generates jobs and inspires innovation, from eco-tourism businesses to tech solutions for conservation. And it fuels cultural pride. While the world looks on, it is you the youth who carry the story of Rwanda’s success. Your TikToks, your Instagram reels, your art, your music, all can amplify this celebration.

You don’t need to be a park ranger to be part of conservation. You can be a storyteller, sharing the event online and telling the world why gorillas matter. You can join community projects, from tree planting to clean-up campaigns, knowing that your actions ripple across ecosystems. You can support local tourism by visiting Musanze, exploring, and celebrating the beauty of your country. You can even dream bigger imagine eco-friendly startups, apps that help track conservation data, or campaigns that link fashion, art, and wildlife. Kwita Izina is not just an event you attend it’s a movement you join.

On 5th September 2025, when names are called out for about 40 baby gorillas, including 18 born last year, remember this: each name tells a story of resilience, survival, and community. And just like them, every young Rwandan carries a name, a story, and a responsibility. Kwita Izina is your chance to stand tall, like the Virungas, and show the world that Rwanda’s future is not only written in history books but also in forests, in conservation, and in the dreams of its youth.

So, will you just watch it on your screen, or will you step up and become part of the story?
