Umuhire Germaine, known as Feza on social media platforms, especially X, is a young woman who has chosen to use these platforms to promote agriculture and animal husbandry at a time when these fields were not widely recognized.
She is currently studying agriculture and animal husbandry at the University of Rwanda, Musanze campus. On her X profile, she has over 11,000 followers. She told KURA that she began using social media in 2020, focusing mainly on raising awareness about agriculture.
She said, “During the Covid-19 pandemic, I had not yet started studying agriculture, so I was using social media casually. Once I started studying at university, I became more passionate about it and decided to start sharing agricultural information with people. It’s something I often do — showing people what agriculture is about and how they can improve their lives through it. I also showcase successful agricultural projects and people who have been uplifted through agriculture, and I’ve noticed that many people appreciate this.”
Umuhire mentioned that she has gained a lot of knowledge and is now regularly invited by many agricultural organizations to help with promotions. In return, she has gained useful experiences that aid her studies and even generates income to support her daily life.
She explained that as a girl studying agriculture, she has been able to connect with influential people through social media. She participates in significant agricultural conferences and other major events, all thanks to the opportunities social media has opened up for her.
She said, “Social media is a great place to showcase your abilities, share your work, and meet people who can assist you in your journey.”
Umuhire also advised other young people to use social media wisely, emphasizing that when used effectively, social media can bring substantial benefits, including financial gain and valuable knowledge.
She thanked the government for making the internet more accessible everywhere, noting that this has provided many opportunities for youth.
Currently, Umuhire aims to expand her social media presence further to showcase the many opportunities in agriculture. She also plans to accumulate more skills and experiences so that in the coming years, she can highlight both the opportunities within agriculture and her personal achievements.
