She earns over 10,000 Rwf a day: Dusabamahoro’s advice to young people about sewing

Dusabamahoro Joselyne is a 30-year-old woman living in Kirehe District, who has been a seamstress for 15 years. She says it’s a job many people look down on, but one that can help you prosper if done well and without dishonesty.

Dusabamahoro, who has two children, lives in the Mahama sector of Kirehe District, where she sews at a center near the Mahama refugee camp.

In an interview with KURA, she explained that sewing is often undervalued, but it can support you financially if you approach it with a focus on progress.

She said that for someone who knows how to sew well, it can bring in significant earnings in a short time.

She said, “For example, I chose to sell kitenge (African fabric) and then sew it for customers. The money I earn from this, I combine with what I make from my sewing work, and it ends up being a good profit. I’ve already been able to buy two plots of land: one cost 600,000 Rwf and the other cost 1 million Rwf. I owe this to sewing, because that’s where I get the most money.”

Dusabamahoro mentioned that on a good day, she can earn over 10,000 Rwf, depending on the number of customers she gets, and sometimes that amount increases significantly. She also said that from kitenge alone, she can make a profit of 20,000 Rwf per week.

She said, “Sewing is a great profession; it’s a job that allows you to earn money every day, and it can provide you with a lot of income. I would advise the youth to learn skills that allow them to start working immediately and, if necessary, even start their own business. Sewing is one of those skills you can learn and immediately start working.”

Dusabamahoro encouraged young people not to look down on sewing, especially since it is often considered less prestigious, because it can help them advance in a noticeable way.
