Miss Geek participant, Mutamiliza, is ready to make an impact with ‘Smart Miner’ innovation

Rwanda’s youth are rising to the challenge and utilizing their skills to tackle pressing issues within society. Jennifer Mutamuliza, a Computer Science graduate student at IPRC Rwanda, stands at the forefront of this movement.

Her passion and determination to make a difference in the mining industry have led her to develop an impactful solution that addresses the challenges faced by underground miners.

The mining sector in Rwanda poses numerous risks and hazards, mirroring the dangers faced by miners working underground.

Mutamiliza’s groundbreaking creation, the Smart Miner Helmet and Monitoring System, is a web-based platform consisting of a helmet equipped with sensors that detect hazardous gasses prevalent in underground mining sites.

The Miss Geek participant is eager to see changes in the mining industry

By recording and transmitting data to a central server, the system empowers miners in the control room to monitor gas levels in real-time and promptly notify their colleagues underground, ensuring enhanced safety measures.

One crucial aspect that Jennifer recognized in the mining industry was the lack of effective communication channels for underground miners. Determined to bridge this gap, she created a solution that utilized cables to transmit data from the Smart Miner Helmet to the control room.

This breakthrough innovation not only improves safety but also demonstrates the power of out-of-the-box thinking and problem-solving skills when addressing complex challenges.

Jennifer believed in her invention which motivated her to participate in the prestigious Miss Geek Competition. Through her comprehensive application and compelling pitch, she earned the honor of representing Rwanda as Miss Geek Rwanda at the highly acclaimed Miss Geek Africa event.

She says young women are capable of breaking barriers

This remarkable achievement not only provided Jennifer with a global platform to showcase her vision but also inspired other young women to embrace their scientific talents and contribute to the empowerment of women in STEM fields.

Jennifer highlights the importance of seizing opportunities and building networks within the science community. By actively engaging with like-minded individuals and participating in competitions, she has gained exposure, established valuable connections, and opened doors to potential future career prospects.

Her journey serves as a powerful reminder to Rwanda’s youth that the pursuit of scientific excellence can lead to personal growth, empowerment, and meaningful contributions to society.

Smart Miner is yet to fully launch

Jennifer’s educational journey was made possible through the support of FAWE Girls School, which awarded her a scholarship. Through her education, she gained invaluable skills, particularly in public speaking, that have shaped her confidence and success. Her story implies the significance of accessible and quality education, especially for young women, as a catalyst for personal and professional development.

As a Computer Science graduate and innovator in Rwanda’s mining industry, Jennifer inspires us to unleash our creative potential and make an indelible impact.

Her Smart Miner Helmet and Monitoring System exemplify the power of innovation and determination in revolutionizing safety standards within the mining sector.

This ignites a call to action, urging young Rwandans to pursue their passions, seize opportunities, and utilize education as a stepping stone towards a brighter future.
