The success that Rwanda’s youth achieve is driven by hard work and knowledge. However, we cannot overlook the important role that guidance and advice from elders play in these accomplishments.
Kakooza Henry, the Acting Mayor of Nyagatare District, is one of the leaders who frequently engages with young people, whether it’s for professional reasons or other activities that bring them together. He emphasized that the youth have the potential to bring about great change, driving even greater progress in their lives.
He stated that the youth should seize the opportunities offered by the government, such as job creation and education programs, and not rely solely on faith without action. He underlined the importance of utilizing the opportunities at their disposal to improve their future.
Kakooza shared his thoughts during a special interview with KURA, where he discussed the opportunities the Rwandan government continues to provide to youth across various sectors.
He explained that the peace and security Rwanda enjoys today, which has been in place for over 30 years, is largely the result of the youth who took the lead in rejecting evil and fighting for the country’s liberation. He described this as a powerful example for today’s youth to follow.
“I want to start with the youth who dedicated themselves to the liberation of this country. They were not old people. While the elderly helped, the majority were young. Today, the peace and progress we have is a direct result of the vision and strength of that youth. Now, Rwanda is a peaceful country, one that Rwandans are proud to live in. A place where everyone can see their future. Many of those who sacrificed back then are now grown, and I, too, who was once young, are growing as well,” he said.
Kakooza continued by highlighting that although there are still many young people facing challenges, the country ultimately belongs to them. He said, “They must make wise decisions about the future of their country. We hope they start early to shape the future they want to see in the years to come. I encourage them to study, plan for a better tomorrow, and make the most of the opportunities available to them in education, innovation, and other fields.”
“When we look at crimes and social issues today, we often find that youth are involved. Therefore, they must move away from negative influences and focus on a better future. They need to understand that they are the ones who will protect and advance their country. They should not shirk their responsibilities by thinking that everything will be taken care of by God. Some people, after completing their studies or exams, simply go to pray. While prayer is important, they should also work hard and make sure that they actively contribute to the good things that exist,” he added.
Kakooza also pointed out that today’s youth have the advantage of growing up in a well-governed society, one that listens to their voices, addresses their needs, and offers real opportunities for them to take on leadership roles. He encouraged them to take full advantage of these opportunities and to always maintain integrity in everything they do.
