From music enthusiast to mentor: The inspiring journey of Mihigo Bertrand

Mihigo Bertrand’s journey into music was sparked by friendships that introduced him to the world of instruments and song. Growing up in Gasabo District, Nyamirambo sector, Mihigo, now 21, never imagined he would pursue music professionally.

His early passion was dancing, inspired by the legendary Michael Jackson. However, after spending time with friends who loved playing music, Mihigo found himself drawn to the guitar and piano, ultimately discovering a natural talent for singing.

In 2022, Mihigo began sharing his passion by teaching others. Starting with basic music training at ‘Club Lafiki,’ he soon realized that teaching not only enhanced his own skills but also allowed him to help others discover their musical potential. Today, Mihigo has gathered a diverse group of students, young and old, eager to learn, and many have gone on to pursue music as a career.

While he acknowledges that music may not always be seen as a lucrative profession, Mihigo has found multiple ways to earn through performances and teaching. He works with various institutions, offering music lessons in exchange for payment, but also emphasizes that, for him, the joy of teaching is priceless. His approach is centered on willingness over ability—he believes that anyone determined to learn, regardless of skill level, can succeed.

Despite his success, Mihigo faces challenges typical of the music profession. Limited resources, such as a shortage of instruments, and the skepticism of parents who view music as unnecessary, often complicate his work. Nonetheless, he remains committed to educating both students and their families, stressing the importance of music in a well-rounded education.

Looking ahead, Mihigo dreams of opening his own music school to further support emerging talents. He hopes to collaborate with other institutions to help Rwanda’s music scene gain international recognition. His ultimate goal is to help young people realize that with dedication and hard work, they too can turn their passions into sustainable careers.

Mihigo’s message to the youth is clear: “Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Work hard, take risks, and explore your talents. Music, like many other professions, can provide you with a fulfilling and financially viable future if you’re willing to put in the effort.”
