There’s a hushed topic often discussed in undertones. The subject? Condom sizes! Because, my friend, size does matter – at least when it comes to ensuring a snug and safe fit.
I began my quest by visiting local pharmacies, hoping to unravel this size enigma. “Many young men come in, often sheepishly asking for the ‘big ones’,” one pharmacist, who requested anonymity, shared with a chuckle. “But what many don’t realize is that wearing the right size is crucial for safety.”
Another pharmacist leaned in and whispered, “You know, some gents come in boasting about needing the largest size, but then return later quietly exchanging them for a smaller fit.” And then, with a hearty laugh, added, “Does size matter? Well, it sure does when you’re trying to avoid an embarrassing mishap!”
It is also the same for young women who are trying to buy condoms, “They come in here and ask for condoms, presumably for their partner, but they really do not know which ones to buy since many think that all condoms are the same.”
“Just like you buy a pair of jeans, you also have to buy the right fit for you.”
Jokes aside, condom sizes vary for a reason. An ill-fitting condom can either be too tight which can limit blood flow and potentially break or too loose risking it slipping off. The consequence? An unplanned surprise or a compromised protection against STIs.
For the Rwandan youth, this is particularly pertinent. With a youthful demographic and a significant drive towards sexual health awareness, the importance of ‘fitting matters’ cannot be overstated.
In fact, we should organize one local health campaign and put it as, “It’s not about how big your ship is, but how well it docks!” Size aside, wearing a condom correctly is imperative. So, how does one find their ‘Goldilocks fit’?
Measure Up! It’s not a task for the shy, but measuring ensures you pick the right size. A simple ruler can help. Length matters, but girth or width is crucial. Remember, it’s about snugness.
Experiment. As one pharmacist said, “If you’re unsure, try a variety pack.” Finding the right fit might take some experimenting, but it’s worth the effort.

Also, remember to ask pharmacists in Rwanda who are approachable and knowledgeable. Our Pharmacists have seen and heard it all. So, don’t hesitate to ask for guidance. No shame in seeking a proper fit!
Most importantly educate yourself. Several NGOs and health organizations in Rwanda offer sexual health workshops. Join one and become a condom connoisseur. The next time you’re in the market for some protection, remember: size does matter, but fit matters most! And as always, wear it with pride!
