Destiney Promise Philoxy is one of the top female basketball players in Rwanda. Besides playing for various teams, including APR WBBC and REG WBBC in major competitions, she is also a key player in the Rwanda National Women’s Basketball Team.
Having grown up in the United States, she moved to Rwanda less than five years ago because of her passion for basketball. Her name has become widely recognized in the sport, as she is one of the main figures striving for victory in national tournaments.
As a result, many young people, especially girls, look up to her as a role model and a symbol that playing basketball as a female is possible.
Currently, she is the captain of the Rwandan Women’s National Basketball Team. She attributes her success to her ability to bond with her teammates.
She says, “I live with everyone, and I know how to get along with people. My fellow players trust me, and I also get to know them outside the court, and that’s why they trust me to do what I do and what they see in me. I love it, and I feel proud that they chose me and trust me.”
Regarding how young girls view her as a role model, she believes the key to their success is putting effort into everything they do.
She advises, “Keep putting in the effort in whatever you do. Never give up on playing or doing what you love because of what others say. Everything is possible if you believe. What has brought me this far is self-belief, and I believe they will go far too.”
