I can’t count how many times I sit in my room and wonder what my future holds. I would sit and imagine all the things I want to do and see myself achieving them. However, the path to the future has never been clear.
I thought that maybe it was only me until I heard from my friends that they always ask themselves what they can do with their life to become successful.
Yeah! Maybe this sounds like you. Don’t worry. You are not alone.
Many people, especially young people ask themselves this question millions of times. “What can I do with my life?” The fear of what tomorrow holds makes us wonder if we are doing a great job or if we are wasting our time.
To some people, the pressure of tomorrow is too much to the extent that they keep comparing themselves to their generation. Is it really necessary to worry about our future? Is it worth it?
In her blog ‘A Guide for Young People: What to Do with Your Life’, Leo Babauta, an author and a psychologist talks about what we should be doing instead of spending our time worrying. I cannot lie that it was easier. Accepting the truth about this question was really a hard pill to swallow.
I am going to share with you some of the tips she gave which I am still practicing and I hope you will learn one or two things from her like I did.
According to Babauta, the first thing we should do is stop worrying about what our future holds and start focusing on what we can do well. It is better to enjoy this time we have because we will never be young again.
Seize the moment. Learn new skills, get an education, and build things, make friends, and travel. Don’t waste this time, make use of it and prepare for your future. Have a goal and a plan to achieve it.
In whatever you do, make sure that you are serving loyalty and trust. People want to work with someone who is trustworthy. People with integrity are hard to find. Be one of them.
Secondly, we should learn to be Okay with discomfort. Life is not a straight line. It is full of chaos but we should do things that are uncomfortable and hard on purpose. It is better to challenge ourselves because as time goes by, we will get used to it and never be intimidated by discomfort again.
Another thing is to be disciplined and avoid distraction at all costs. Minimizing the time we spend on social media and using that time to explore new things will help us to know what we can do best. Yes, this is still hard for me, but I’m trying.
Last but not the least is to learn how to control our mind. We don’t have to overthink everything. We should stop being controlled by fear and learn how to meditate. This will help with our self-growth as we will be reflecting on our inner selves.
From everything that she advised, I can honestly tell you that they work. I have not mastered all of them, but it’s been days and I am seeing good results. The more I focus on what I can do best, the more I see the World from another perspective. Of course, I make mistakes, but it is a part of the process, and I never condemn myself for that. This is a journey and you too can be a part of it. You won’t regret it, I assure you.
