We all grow up with dreams, right? Those things we hope to do when we’re older, the ones that reflect what we’re passionate about. Some of us dream of being doctors, others artists or athletes. But for Kayigire Heureuse, it was always driving.
From a young age, she was fascinated by the idea of being behind the wheel, controlling the car, and feeling the power of the road. It wasn’t a random choice; it was something that made her feel alive, and she’s turned that passion into her career. Today, Kayigire is a young woman in Kigali who drives a taxi, and she’s making it work like a pro.
“I didn’t come into this job because I had no other options. I had many opportunities to continue with what I studied in high school, and before I started driving a taxi, I had another job, but I left it behind because I wanted to do what I love. Driving makes me happy. When I’m behind the wheel, I feel joy, and it even brings in money.” she said.
For Kayigire, driving isn’t just a job, it’s a feeling, a passion. While some might spend their free time dancing, singing, or watching sports, Kayigire would rather be on the road, driving. There’s nothing like it.
“Driving is something I love. When I’m doing it, I feel happy. I don’t like going out, I don’t have a favorite sport, and there’s nothing else that makes me happy like driving does. Sure, I’m studying law at university, and I plan to finish my degree, but driving will always be there. If I have a car to use for taxi work, I’ll do it because it relieves me.” she confirmed.
She even continues to study law at university, but no matter where her studies take her, she knows driving will always be a part of her life. It’s not just a hobby — it’s a calling.
While Kayigire enjoys her job, it’s not without its challenges. Being a woman in a job that is traditionally dominated by men has its difficulties. She’s faced her share of judgment and doubts, especially from people who expect women to stick to certain roles. But Kayigire stands strong in the face of it all.
“I’m scared of going to Nyabugogo because it’s crowded with many cars and people. When I get there and as a woman, I make a small mistake, people start criticizing me, saying it’s because I’m a woman. Sometimes, I’m on a bad road and need to reverse or turn, and I ask someone to guide me, and they say it’s because I’m a woman that I’m struggling. But these are things that can happen to anyone, even men.” she said.
Despite these challenges, Kayigire doesn’t let the negativity define her. She stays focused on her goals and keeps doing what she loves. And not everyone sees it as a negative. Some people actually respect the work she does and appreciate her for it.
“The first time she drove me, I thought it was unusual, but I decided to let her drive, and it went really well. She drove very well, and I trust women more than men in some things. That’s why I decided to keep working with her because women are very careful in what they do.” she confirmed.
Kayigire’s story is proof that following your passion isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. She’s turning her dream into a reality, showing everyone that with hard work and determination, you can do what you love and make a difference.
