Junior Rumaga, a celebrated Rwandan poet, is proof that passion, perseverance, and authenticity can transform one’s life. His journey from a small rural village to national recognition in the Rwandan arts scene is an inspiring story of how poetry can uplift not just an individual, but an entire community. Rumaga is now using his success to guide the next generation of poets and artists through his initiative, Ibyanzu, which aims to empower young talents and provide them with opportunities to showcase their skills.
Born in the village of Rubona Hill, Ruhango District, in the Mbuye Sector of Nyakarekare Cell, Rumaga grew up on Gisanga Hill in Ruhango before his family moved to Muhanga in search of a better life. Raised in a family of farmers and herders, Rumaga’s early years were defined by limited resources. Despite the struggles, his home always provided the essentials, and his passion for the arts blossomed from a young age. He fondly recalls how his family, despite not having much, nurtured his creativity.
Interestingly, Rumaga did not receive formal schooling in poetry. His love for the art form was a gift that was nurtured within his family, particularly by his grandfather, who performed acts reflective of poetry. These early influences played a significant role in shaping Rumaga’s artistic journey. His grandfather’s support, including financial help for his artistic endeavors, provided him with the encouragement he needed to pursue his passion, even when the road was difficult.
In his early years, Rumaga faced a lack of resources that limited his ability to showcase his talents. However, his determination never wavered. He worked tirelessly, and over time, his unique voice in poetry began to stand out. He never tried to imitate others, focusing instead on being true to himself. “I didn’t come here trying to be someone else,” he says. “That’s what I tell those who seek advice—they should come to be themselves, not try to become someone else.”
This focus on individuality became Rumaga’s defining trait. For him, authenticity is key to success, and he encourages others to embrace their true selves. “Being myself became my uniqueness. It’s hard to surpass who I am. You might be better than me in some ways, but when you come to my corner, I will guide you because this is what I’ve carefully planned.” This commitment to self-expression, paired with hard work, led him to become one of Rwanda’s most beloved poets.
As his reputation grew, Rumaga found himself in a position to give back to the artistic community. When he was appointed to the Art Rwanda Ubuhanzi board, he felt that he had hit two birds with one stone. Not only was he being recognized for his own artistic achievements, but he also had the opportunity to help young artists, a dream he had long held.
This vision led to the founding of Ibyanzu, a group dedicated to promoting young artistic talent. The group offers a space for young people to develop their skills, gain recognition, and connect with those who can help further their careers. “In Ibyanzu, there are talented young men and women, including a child under one year old. They are talented and have good manners,” Rumaga shares proudly. The group has already seen success in providing a platform for emerging artists, and Rumaga is committed to helping them find their way in the industry.
Rumaga draws on traditional proverbs to explain the importance of supporting young talent. “A child who is raised poorly will suffer from the consequences of their mother’s actions, and no one understands the value of water like the one who experiences the struggle of fetching it,” he says. These sayings highlight his belief that young artists need the right guidance to grow and thrive. He recalls how, during his own journey, he didn’t receive much support in the early stages, but he’s determined to change that for others.
Reflecting on the progress made through Ibyanzu, Rumaga notes that the group’s first success was creating a platform for young artists to showcase their talents. The second success came when these artists began to receive opportunities, one after the other. Rumaga plays a crucial role in connecting his protégés with those who want to collaborate with them, providing them with the necessary tools to succeed.
Looking ahead, Rumaga dreams of a future where people can make a living from their artistic endeavors. He envisions a time when art, especially poetry, is respected as a legitimate career path, transforming lives and contributing to the cultural fabric of the nation. “I hope that those who come after me will be proud to make a living from what they do. I hope to achieve this on a scale that truly sustains me,” he says.
Poetry has already given Rumaga so much—recognition, financial stability, and a sense of purpose. He believes it’s only fair that future generations of poets and artists receive the same opportunities. With two albums already released and a third in the works, Rumaga continues to be a prolific creator. His latest album, Era, has received positive attention, and he has more than 30 works, including collaborations with Ibyanzu, still in the pipeline.
Rumaga is also passionate about the need for more support for the arts in Rwanda. He believes that, like a farmer planting seeds, the next generation of poets and artists needs nurturing to grow. He warns that poetry should not be overshadowed by music or other forms of entertainment, as it plays a vital role in society. “Let’s support emerging talents to avoid this,” he urges. “It’s like a farmer planting seeds. Some may struggle to grow, but if we nurture them, they will grow.”
Having faced many challenges in his journey, Rumaga remains resilient. He continues to advocate for the youth, urging them to invest in their talents. “I urge the youth not to disregard their talents. Whether you have a gift for humor or giving advice, find a place to develop it because a country based on the talents of its youth will prosper,” he advises.
Rumaga’s story is not just one of personal achievement, but also a beacon of hope for aspiring artists. His journey from humble beginnings to a leading figure in Rwandan poetry is a testament to the power of dedication and self-belief. As he continues to mentor the next generation of poets and artists, he is shaping a legacy that will have a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Rwanda.
In the years to come, the name Junior Rumaga will not only be remembered for his contributions to poetry but also for his role in empowering countless young artists to follow their dreams. Through his work with Ibyanzu and his continued artistic endeavors, Rumaga is paving the way for a thriving, sustainable art community in Rwanda, one that celebrates the talents of the youth and ensures that their voices are heard.
