Working in a professional environment can be challenging, especially for young people just starting their careers. There are many challenges to navigate, from learning new skills to impressing your boss and colleagues. However, one mistake can have a significant impact on your career growth.
In our discussion with Kelly Iranejeje, CEO at Codity Devs, he highlighted that there are two mistakes employees can make that can affect their career growth; procrastination and a lack of timely delivery of tasks assigned to them.
Kelly Iranejeje, at the tender age of 21, has already gained a wealth of experience in the realm of leadership and management. In 2019, Iranejeje established Codity Devs, which presently employs a team of five individuals.
Codity Devs is a technological solution that allows its clientele. Codity Devs provide a full-service development of web & mobile applications, custom systems, SaaS products, and IT solutions. They not only believe but know that many things in the software development industry can be dealt with better – from design to development and support.
Through this experience, the young entrepreneur has developed a keen understanding of the habits that effective employers should embody and the common mistakes employees should strive to avoid.
He says, “Some mistakes can be made and not have an impact on the person, but procrastinating and not delivering tasks assigned to them on a daily basis will be a habit over time, and therefore affecting their career growth.”
“As a CEO, I have seen many employees fall into the trap of procrastination, delaying their work until the last minute. Unfortunately, this habit often leads to a substandard work
product and can have significant consequences for your professional reputation.” He says.
On the other hand, the timely delivery of tasks is a critical skill highly valued in the workplace. By delivering quality work on time, you demonstrate that you are reliable, organized, and efficient, which are all desirable qualities for any employee.
However, procrastination and timeliness are just two of the many common mistakes that people make in the workplace. Other mistakes include;
Not asking for help – Everyone needs help at some point in their career. Whether it is learning a new skill or handling a difficult project, it is essential to reach out to your colleagues and superiors when you need assistance.
By doing so, you demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow, and you also build strong relationships with your team.
Being too friendly – While it is essential to build good relationships with your colleagues, it is also crucial to maintain a professional demeanor. Being too friendly can lead to a lack of respect from your colleagues, and it can also blur the lines between personal and professional relationships.
When conversing with Iranejeje, he shared that one of his early career mistakes was being too friendly with his employees. He noted that “they forgot our professional relationship,” which led to a lack of respect and a decline in productivity.
This is a valuable lesson for all young professionals to keep in mind. While it is great to be friendly with your colleagues, it is essential to maintain a professional relationship to achieve success in your career whether you are an employer or employee.
The workplace is constantly evolving, and it is essential to be adaptable to change. Whether it is a new project, new software, or a new team member, it is crucial to be flexible and open-minded to new ideas and ways of working. By doing so, you can demonstrate your ability to adapt and learn quickly, which is a highly desirable quality in any employee.
The young CEO continued emphasizing the negative impacts of having an employee who isn’t adaptable. He said, “ This working era we are in, there is a need to stay updated on the always-changing trends, skills, and knowledge, so If an employee is not able to adapt to these changes and learn fast, it will hinder his or her progress but also the company’s progress as a whole.”
It is key to note that adaptability is a crucial factor to consider as it is what the new era requires.
Working in a professional environment can be challenging, but it is important to avoid common mistakes that can have a significant impact on your career growth.
Procrastination, lack of timely delivery, not asking for help, being too friendly, and not being adaptable are all common mistakes to avoid. Remember, by demonstrating your reliability, organization, efficiency, willingness to learn, and adaptability, you can achieve success in your career.
