Hey there, have you been wondering when to tell your employer about your disability? It’s a crucial decision that can have a significant impact on your career, and it’s not always an easy choice to make.

Wellness is an important aspect of our lives, especially in the workplace. It’s essential to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally to perform well in your job.

If you’re a young person with a disability in Rwanda, you may face additional challenges due to societal stigmas and discrimination. However, it’s important to know your rights and understand the benefits of disclosing your disability to your employer.

For instance, disclosing your disability can help your employer provide reasonable accommodations to help you succeed in your job. It can also help break down barriers and reduce stigma surrounding disabilities in the workplace.

Rwanda’s government has recognized the importance of inclusion and empowerment for people with disabilities. In 2019, the government launched a national campaign to promote the rights and dignity of people with disabilities.

The campaign aims to raise awareness and promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life, including education, employment, and social activities.

As a young person with a disability, it’s important to be aware of your rights and the support available to you. You can seek assistance from disability organizations, such as the Rwanda Union of the Blind, and the National Union of Disability Organizations of Rwanda, which advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and provide support services.

When deciding to disclose your disability at your employer, it’s important to consider your individual situation. Are you struggling to perform your job duties due to your disability? If so, it may be best to speak to your employer sooner rather than later. By doing so, you can receive the support and accommodations you need to succeed in your career.

Timing is also essential when it comes to disclosing your disability. You may feel hesitant to disclose right away, and that’s okay. Take the time to consider your options and prepare what you’ll say when you’re ready to disclose.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to disclosing your disability. However, by speaking up and asking for accommodations, you can ensure that you have the support you need to thrive in your career.

As a young person with a disability in Rwanda, you have the right to equal opportunities and access to education and employment. Seek assistance from disability organizations and advocacy groups to ensure that your rights are protected, and you have the resources you need to succeed.
