Louise Mushikiwabo’s Advice to the Youth

In today’s society, many young people are no longer characterized by strong values or clearly defined principles, especially within Rwandan society.

This behavior often worries leaders, prompting some to offer guidance to the youth, urging them to behave appropriately and strive for meaningful self-improvement.

Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary-General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), gave advice to the youth, urging them to uphold values that define Rwandans.

She delivered this message while speaking to girls supported by the Imbuto Foundation—those who have excelled academically and are known as Inkubito z’Icyeza.

Mushikiwabo explained that the personal effort one puts into achieving their goals plays a key role in their success.

She continued by telling the youth that they need to make sound decisions early on, because when one is still young, they are often chasing many things at once, making it difficult to choose wisely.

“It’s important to make choices because those decisions will follow you later in life. When you’re older, your past choices help you make even better ones,” she said.

Mushikiwabo attended Ecole Primaire St. Alex for primary school and continued her secondary education at Lycée Notre-Dame d’Afrique Nyundo, a science-focused school.

Driven by a love for languages, she chose to study languages at the University of Rwanda in Nyakinama, where she studied English. She later pursued French studies in the United States.

As someone who studied and now works abroad, she urged young people to avoid adopting just any culture they come across. Instead, they should embrace their uniqueness and what sets them apart.

“When you lack values, it follows you. Your values are your backbone… When you’re trying to be both yourself and someone else, it can wear you down and cause pain. Our values as Rwandans—especially in this time and given our history—make it something to be proud of to be Rwandan today,” she said.

Mushikiwabo concluded by encouraging youth to listen to their parents and respect the guidance they receive daily, as it is meant to prepare them for a better future.
